Dear Parents,                                                         12-05-16

We have started a new non-fiction writing unit.  Students are working to teach their reader about a topic by writing facts about something they know well.  Some of the topics include: sports, dinosaurs, gardens, and school.  We will learn about how to create a table of contents, write chapters, and make diagrams with labels.  This new genre has been exciting for the class…they all want to “teach” what they know!

Our math lessons have focused on addition facts to 20.  We have practiced using several strategies that will help students become fluent with their addition facts.  Please look for your child’s Topic 3 assessment next week in their Monday folder, along with their first progress report card.

The class has done a great job returning their reading books in the book bag everyday.  Encourage your child to read to you or a sibling so they can practice reading smoothly and with confidence.

It was wonderful to meet with you during parent conferences.   Please feel free to call with questions or come in to talk anytime, not just during conference time!

Save the Date!  On Wednesday, December 21st the first graders will celebrate their science investigation of “Light” with a lantern parade in the late afternoon.  I will let you know the details as they are completed!
