Dear Parents,                                                              11-7-16

Your first grader has been practicing reading strategies for when they come to a difficult word in their books.  Some of the strategies they should be using include using the pictures, noticing beginning and ending sounds and thinking about what makes sense.  Your child will begin to bring home books at their “just right” level the week after conferences.  I will share more about how to help your child with reading at home during your child’s conference.

In writing we are working on writing “How-to” books.  This genre allows students to teach about something they can do well and tell the steps with clear directions in the correct order.  We have made applesauce, and scooped and counted pumpkin seeds so the children have had experiences to draw from to help write their “how-to” books.  They have also had the opportunity during “studio” time to use a How-to book to make something like a paper airplane, a caterpillar garden or model of an island.

I am looking forward to meeting with all of you for Parent/Teacher conferences next Monday or Tuesday.  Students will go home at 11:40 on both days.  You can decide if you’d like to have your child present for the meeting.

See you soon!
