Dear Parents,                                                               1-8-18

Happy New Year!  I hope you all had a nice start to the year and enjoyed the break and snow days with your children.

The first graders will begin an opinion writing unit and will write reviews of special classes, books, games and food.   They will learn how to be persuasive by telling their reasons why they believe something they like is the best.   I am sending a paper bag with a note explaining that they will need a small collection that they can use to compare and write about.  If you don’t have a collection, don’t worry I will have extra collections available.

In math, topic 5 is focused on the understanding that the equal sign indicates that both sides of an equation represent the same value.  Students will decide if addition and subtraction equations are true or false and find the missing number in an equation.

We are learning about shadows and how they are created and change.  If we are able to go outside on a warmer morning this week we plan to investigate when our shadows are the longest…early morning, mid morning or noon.  Many children have already made their predictions based on the shadow discoveries we have done in the classroom.  Ask your child what they think!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Coffin
